Economics
“The study of Economics is aimed at managing a country for the well-being of its people. Issues discussed include world poverty, fairness and sustainable development.”
From individuals’ behaviour to social and global affairs
Factors affecting our everyday behaviour, particularly those related to consumption and production are introduced to students. Daily life questions like where to buy lunch, comparing the economic efficiency of doing community service or studying at home, are introduced to enhance students’ learning motivation. Through various perspectives, students understand social and national policies regarding livelihood and society. Also, students can learn that the interdependence among individuals, enterprises, departments of governments exists in regions and countries.
Flipped classroom and self-directed learning
To facilitate students’ self-directed learning, teachers prepare and select a wide range of learning clips as pre-tasks and resources for students to consolidate their knowledge. These learning clips not only include local production from CUHK and QEF, but also online resources from overseas websites, such as Crash Course Economics, Marginal Revolution University. Students could learn beyond the classroom setting and further extend their learning.
Cultivating critical thinking and problem solving skills
Our department designs teaching materials that cater for learners’ diversity with up-to-date domestic and foreign economic statistics. They are closely related to global affairs and current trends. The subject-specific presentations and analytical approach enable students to learn to think logically. As students learn to apply theories and concepts to real-world issues, their problem-solving and critical thinking skills are enhanced. These skills are essential for life-long learning in a variety of fields of study and career development.
Reconstructing a broadened worldview
Students understand the ideas of Economics are not limited to individual decision making, but interdependent production activities among enterprises, government policies and impact on people’s livelihood. In the world of globalization, Economics lets students understand issues like disparity of wealth, uneven income distribution, international trade and interdependent relationships. All these enable students to develop the vision to face future challenges.
