Service Learning – F.3 Service Learning Day
The National and Social Caring Committee, in collaboration with the YWCA, orchestrated a “Secondary 3 Inclusive Service Learning Program” for the purpose of instilling empathy and honing the planning and execution skills of the students. With the guidance of our teachers, the YWCA, and social workers, the Form 3 students were taught how to tailor activities suitable for the elderly and then implemented these activities at the Wong Tai Sin Women’s Tsing Lung Cheung Integrated Service Center on 27 May.
Two of the participating classes curated a host of engaging activities such as games and crafts with the elderly, in addition to arranging performances where they played musical instruments and sang classic songs that the elderly were familiar with. Throughout the event, the students demonstrated a proactive approach in conversing with the elderly, attentively listening to their voices, and attentively expressing their care for them. Notably, the activity successfully exemplified the spirit of intergenerational integration between the elderly and the young, with both parties enjoying themselves immensely.
The other two classes of students visited both the elderly living alone and those in the district, conveying blessings and distributing gift bags. The intergenerational conversations between the students and seniors were enriching and heartwarming, fostering a greater sense of care and warmth. In turn, this created a more interesting and fulfilling life experience for the seniors. Simultaneously, the students were able to gain insight into the needs, physical and mental health of the elderly, grasping the importance of mutual care and exhibiting a commendable spirit of community camaraderie.
