Cultural and Economic Study Tour to Malaysia
In late March, our school organised a four-day “Malaysia Cultural and Economic Study Tour.” This trip aimed to guide students in experiencing Malaysia’s historical heritage and modern economic landscape firsthand, broadening their international horizons through on-site exploration.
Regarding cultural learning, teachers and students traveled to the World Heritage site of the historic city of Malacca. By visiting renowned attractions such as the Stadthuys and the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, students gained an in-depth understanding of Malaysia’s historical trajectory and its unique Peranakan culture, experiencing the diverse charm of the ancient city. The itinerary also covered landmarks including the Former Supreme Court, Merdeka Square, and National Monument. Furthermore, the group visited Malaysia’s digital hub (Cyberjaya) and the Jamek Mosque to learn about the country’s multicultural landscape.
Economic exploration was the core of this trip. Students visited the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre to learn how the local area transitioned from resource dependency to a high value-added craft manufacturing industry. They also experienced the vibrancy of the local retail and cultural-creative industries at the Central Market. At the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery, students learned about Malaysia’s economic history and its world-leading Islamic financial system in an engaging and accessible manner.
A major highlight of the itinerary was the visit to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia. Embassy officials personally briefed the teachers and students on the development of China-Malaysia bilateral relations, as well as the economic and trade cooperation achievements of the “Belt and Road” Initiative in the region, allowing students to acquire first-hand information from official channels. During the interactive session, students enthusiastically asked questions regarding foreign policies and Sino-Malaysian cultural exchanges. This rare opportunity not only deepened the students’ understanding of national affairs and strengthened their national pride and sense of social responsibility, but also further cultivated their global literacy from a macroscopic perspective, bringing the study tour to a perfect conclusion.
