The “National Hero in Light and Shadow: Lin Zexu in the Documentary” Sharing Session was successfully held at our school on 6 May. This event was co-organised by the Asia Educational Technology and Cultural Foundation (a UNESCO partner organisation) and the Joint Research Institute for the International Communication of Language and Culture (Hong Kong Base) under the Ministry of Education. We were honoured to welcome numerous distinguished guests from the social and cultural sectors.
During the event, Mr. Yu Yuanwei, Chief Director of the documentary “Lin Zexu: Beyond the Destruction of Opium at Humen” and Associate Professor at the Communication University of Zhejiang, shared his experiences in producing the film. Principal So Yui-hung, hosted an insightful dialogue with Ms. Lin Dongni, the 7th-generation descendant of Lin Zexu, and Ms. Chan Chun-lok, Assistant Director (TV & Corporate Businesses), Radio Television Hong Kong. During the session, Ms. Lin Dongni encouraged our students with the “Ten Things of No Benefit” (Shi Wu Yi), a treasured family motto left by Lin Zexu.
“Lin Zexu: Beyond the Destruction of Opium at Humen” is a five-episode historical and humanities documentary launched by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) on 25 September 2025. The series was produced to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and to commemorate the 240th anniversary of Lin Zexu’s birth.
Combining on-site visits with expert interviews, the documentary utilises AI-generated animation to reconstruct historical scenes. It showcases a multidimensional portrait of Lin Zexu beyond his famous role in the destruction of opium at Humen, highlighting his life as a capable water conservancy official, a rigorous scholar, an exile, and a thinker, while also framing his life story through a unique Hong Kong perspective.
