InnoPower@JC: KTLS ‘Sparkle in Service Learning’ Project
With the support of the Jockey Club Charities Trust, InnoPower@JC: KTLS ‘Sparkle in Service Learning’ Project, co-organised by the Student Affairs Committee and the National and Social Caring Committee, has been launched this year. It is developed on the basis of three visions – “Respect Students”, “Grow Independently” and “Contribute to Others”. With the self-directed learning and design thinking strategies they learned in the course, students will initiate their self-directed service projects. On the one hand, it cultivates students’ growth thinking and their different abilities. On the other hand, we hope that the project promotes personal growth and through serving others, they learn to appreciate and validate themselves. During the summer holiday, our teachers first attended “design thinking” workshops and had multiple meetings in preparation for the course. Aligned with the project objectives, a group of S4 students took part in a series of training courses in August and September. The course began with the theme “Explore the Gifts and Pursue Personal Growth.” In summer, students participated in the team building activities, including treasure hunt and problem-solving activities on campus, and personal growth workshops. These opportunities allowed students not only to explore the impossible in life and enhance resilience, but also to promote team collaboration and exert their leadership skills. Additionally, in the form of storytelling and interaction, students learnt how to set and actualize their goals, through which they developed the ability to reflect on and analyze their work. Our students, empowered to be self-directed learners, then put into practice and carried out their service projects. The design thinking courses were co-taught by our teachers and the La Violet Education team. Students first visited Dream Impact a community of socially minded entrepreneurs. They engaged in wheelchair activities, and exchanged views on social innovation services with Mr. Tom Chui, the founder and director of Inclusive Impact HK. Representatives of Tuenmunality and Little Woods Nature Education were also invited to share with students the bits and pieces of their attempts and breakthroughs. The theme of this year’s service is “People with Disabilities.” Students visited and interviewed different people and subsequently designed their own service plans. Stay tuned for updates in October.
