Partnering Across Sectors and Spread Love to Over 200 Elderly Households this Mid-Autumn Festival
In celebration of the 155th anniversary of True Light’s founding, Kowloon True Light School hosted the Kick-off Ceremony for Project Silver alongside its all-school “Pass It On” Service Day. The heart-warming event brought together guests, parents, alumni, teachers, and students in a shared celebration of love and community. Following the ceremony, teachers and students set off to visit elderly residents across local public housing estates and care homes, putting the school motto “Thou Art the Light of the World” into practice during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Deepening Intergenerational Harmony through Technology for Good
To address Hong Kong’s aging population with empathy and care, Kowloon True Light School adopted the theme “Light Up Your Soul, Make Others Whole” for the academic year’s year-long Project Silver initiative. Grounded in traditional Chinese virtues of filial piety, benevolence, and unity, the project encourages students to understand the physical and emotional needs of the elderly, and cherish them as wise life mentors.

Through Project Silver, elderly individuals visit campus classrooms to learn alongside students, including sharing skills in Tai Chi Softball during PE lessons, exploring scientific principles side-by-side in Chemistry laboratories, and passing down Cantonese Nam Yin, an item of intangible cultural heritage, in Music classes. The initiative embraces the concept of “Technology for Good,” encouraging students to apply digital tools to caring actions and strengthening their commitment to social responsibility.

True Light Stars Illuminate a 155-Year Legacy
At the ceremony, School Supervisor Reverend Wong Ka Fai delivered an address encouraging students, noting that the elderly have devoted their lives to society and that their life wisdom represents a “silver glow” worth inheriting with humility. Paired with students’ youth and compassion, their “True Light”, the two generations illuminate each other.

Reverend Wong Ka Fai, Principal Lee Yi Ying, and guest representatives pulled ribbons on a heart-shaped installation to symbolise gathering community goodwill. As the assembly sang the beloved song “Pass It On”, participants lit up their wrist-worn “True Light Stars” sequentially, passing the glow hand-to-hand and forming a glowing “155” pattern to celebrate the enduring legacy of True Light.

Reaching Over 200 Households with Joy and Innovation
Following the ceremony, students and teachers set off for Mid-Autumn visits supported by multiple partner organisations:
Coordination & Care: Social Service Department of The Free Methodist Church of Hong Kong, Christian Family Service Centre, and the Tin Keung, Wang Tau Hom, and Lok Fu Care Teams in Wong Tai Sin District.
Volunteer Support: Tsing Harbour Youth Exchange Promotion Association.
Outreach: Elderly care homes and public housing estates in Lok Fu, Chuk Yuen, Tak Tin, and Tsui Ping, reaching over 200 solitary and elderly couple households.

During the visits, service teams distributed festive gift packages featuring low-sugar mooncakes and Snowflake Crisp hand-crafted by senior chefs at social enterprise Gingko House. Applying communication techniques learned from La Violet Education, students also introduced a dementia-prevention AI application developed by Medmind Technology, engaging the elderly with interactive games that combine technology with human-centred care.

Carrying Forward the 155-Year Educational Mission
The launch event and service day mark a step forward in Kowloon True Light School’s holistic education and character development framework. Over the coming year, the school will continue to offer elderly-themed learning modules, intergenerational workshops, and community service projects to cultivate empathy and civic awareness, staying true to the “Pass It On” spirit across the community.
