Chinese Culture Week 2022
“Play” is a significant component of everyone’s childhood. It’s also a manifestation of the wisdom and culture of the past and different generations. The theme of this year’s Chinese Culture Week is “Children’s Playtime.” Through a series of activities, the Chinese Language Department brought students down memory lane and recreated some vanishing activities that were once everyone’s pastime in their heyday. Revising their childhood memory and taking a glimpse into the rampants of history, students gained a deeper understanding of different Chinese cultures.
1. Children’s games in the past – through the activities we carried out specifically for students to experience intriguing traditional toys such as gyroscope, jumping plane, bamboo dragonfly, nine-link ring, and Kong Ming lock, students were invited to reflect on the transformative nature of history, the evolution of toys and their cultural value.
2. Electronic Playmates – students learned about Chinese culture by solving puzzles and riddles through different electronic games.
3. The Footsteps of Martial Arts – we were honored to invite Dr. Poon Bu-chiu to host the school assembly with the topic of “The Greatest of Chivalry: The Spirit of Confucianism in Jin Yong’s Martial Arts Novels”; we also held a dubbing contest in which students from different houses were assigned Jin Yong’s works. We also collaborated with the Reading Promotion Committee to hold a small-scale book exhibition and design Jin Yong’s novel-themed doll paper which was later given to students as a reward for their participation in the activities.
4. Arts and Culture – workshops on face painting, kite flying and Chinese painting were held. We collaborated with the Science Department to produce soaps with poems printed on them.
5. Interesting Talk – a special exhibition on “Hong Kong Food and Drink” was held to share with students old Hong Kong snacks through graphical images and textual information.
In the 5-day activities, students were given insights into Chinese culture associated with leisure and the creative power of children in the past. They relished learning about some of the most valuable collective memories shared by hundreds of thousands of people in this city.
